Copiapoa hypogaea
Rare spineless species, forming small heads to 5cm with multiple offsets. Plants have a large underground taproot that stores water and allows the plants to shrink over the winter period. 3cm yellow flowers appear over the summer months.
Position – under protected partially shaded positions outdoors. Indoors only in sunny positions otherwise they will lose their nice shape and colour. Flowering will only occur in good light.
Watering – can be watered all year round but should almost dry between waterings. Growth is very slow. Plants will survive without water for very long periods but will shrink a little.
Feeding – 25% of recommended dosage monthly in growing period. The less fertiliser, the better the shape of the plant.
Repotting – best left in small pots for many years. Try not to disturb the root system when repotting.
