Distinctive Features
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, intricate flowers that resemble ballerinas in motion. The flowers are typically 1-2cm in diameter (approximately 0.5-1 inch) and have a creamy white to pale yellow colour with reddish-purple markings. They often have a pleasant fragrance.
- Pseudobulbs: Grows from small, oval-shaped pseudobulbs that are spaced along a rhizome. The pseudobulbs are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch) and store water and nutrients for the plant.
- Leaves: Each pseudobulb produces a single, leathery leaf that is typically 5-10cm long (approximately 2-4 inches). The leaves are dark green and have a slightly folded appearance.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum is an epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces. It can be mounted on cork bark or grown in a hanging basket with a well-draining orchid mix.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This orchid thrives in a humid environment. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser, diluted to half strength, every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for healthy growth. Avoid placing the plant in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
