Sempervivum 'Sir William Lawrence' is a cultivated variety within the genus Sempervivum of the Crassulaceae family. Its parentage traces to species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, where plants grow in rocky outcrops and shallow, free-draining soils under full sun. This natural heritage equips the cultivar with high tolerance for both cold winters and summer droughts.
The plant forms compact rosettes of fleshy, pointed leaves that display seasonal colour variation, often intensifying during cooler months. Leaves may develop a blend of green and red hues, with tones shifting depending on environmental conditions. Offsets are produced freely, creating spreading clusters over time. Like all Sempervivum, each rosette is monocarpic, completing its life cycle by flowering once before dying.
Flowering typically occurs in summer, with a tall, leafy stalk arising from mature rosettes to bear clusters of star-shaped flowers. These are usually pink to reddish and attract insect pollinators. Following seed production, the spent rosette dies back, leaving room for surrounding offsets to maintain the colony’s growth.
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires full sun to maintain compact form and strong leaf colour.
- Water: Water sparingly, ensuring soil dries thoroughly between applications.
- Media: Use a well-draining, gritty mix suitable for alpine and succulent plants.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during the active growing season if needed.
- Temperature: Tolerates frost and sub-zero conditions when kept dry.
- Repotting: Infrequent; refresh substrate or divide offsets when clusters become crowded.
