Cotyledon orbiculata Variegated (Round leaf form)
cancel Sold out
Cotyledon orbiculata Variegated (Rounded leaf form) is a cultivated variant of a widespread South African species that thrives naturally on rocky slopes and sandy soils. The rounded, fleshy leaves in this form show creamy-yellow variegation with green panels and red to pink edging, often accentuated by bright sun. Like other forms of the species, the leaves are coated in a waxy bloom that helps reduce water loss and protects against harsh light. Cotyledon orbiculata is a highly variable plant, ranging from broad rounded leaves to elongated finger-like types, and in maturity it may produce tall stalks with umbels of orange-red, tubular flowers that attract sunbirds and insects in its native range. Beyond its ornamental appeal, the species has long been used in South African folk practices, where the thick leaves were applied for minor ailments such as warts, corns and earache, adding a cultural layer to its horticultural value.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight to full sun; variegation intensifies with higher light exposure.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings; overwatering may cause root rot.
- Humidity: Thrives in low humidity and well-ventilated conditions, making it ideal for dry climates.
- Temperature: Best suited for temperatures between 15–25°C but can tolerate cooler conditions down to 5°C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted succulent fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent excess moisture retention.
- Propagation: Easily propagated through leaf cuttings or stem cuttings, allowing new plants to establish quickly.
- Toxic to pets if ingested, so keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
