Cryptanthus bivittatus - Earth Star Bromeliad

Cryptanthus bivittatus is a small terrestrial bromeliad that forms a low, star-shaped rosette of narrow, striped leaves. The foliage is generally green with cream or pink longitudinal markings, with the strength of the colour influenced by light levels.

Cryptanthus have an unusual growth habit. New pups form around and above the older rosettes, gradually creating a layered or stacked clump rather than remaining rooted neatly inside a pot.

Plants will be supplied as loose pups without a pot or growing media. Pups may have few or no developed roots when received. This is normal. They will need to be established in the customer's own pot and suitable free-draining media.

Care

• Light: Provide bright, indirect light to encourage stronger leaf striping. Avoid harsh midday and afternoon sun.
• Water: Keep the media lightly moist while the pup establishes, but never waterlogged. Allow the upper layer to begin drying between waterings.
• Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity with good air movement.
• Media: Use a loose, free-draining bromeliad or indoor plant mix.
• Planting: Rest the base of the pup against the surface of the media and secure it if needed. Do not bury the centre of the rosette.
• Temperature: Best grown in warm conditions between approximately 18–27°C. Protect from cold temperatures.
• Fertiliser: Apply a weak liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during active growth.
