Cryptanthus bivittatus, commonly known as the Earth Star, originates from the tropical rainforests of Brazil. Known for its vibrant, star-shaped foliage and adaptability to indoor environments, it is an admired member of the Bromeliaceae family.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Flattened, star-shaped rosette of leaves with dramatic longitudinal stripes, often in shades of green, pink, and cream.
- Growth Habit: Compact and ground-hugging, typically reaching a height of 10-15 cm and spreading up to 20 cm across.
- Flowers: Small, inconspicuous white blooms nestled within the centre of the rosette, which appear sporadically throughout the year.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight; avoid direct sunlight to prevent scorching.
- Water: Keep consistently moist but not waterlogged; allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity; mist regularly or place near a humidity tray.
- Media: Well-draining, peat-based or bromeliad-specific potting mix.
- Temperature: Optimal temperatures range from 18°C to 27°C; protect from temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Apply diluted liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its current container, preferably in spring.

- Propagation is easily achieved through offsets, which form around the base of mature plants.
- Non-toxic and safe for pets, making it ideal for households with animals.
