Cynanchum marnierianum (WA Prohibited)
cancel Sold out
Cynanchum marnierianum is a leafless, twining succulent in the Apocynaceae family, endemic to Madagascar. It is found in dry, rocky habitats and semi-arid scrubland, often growing over stones or other vegetation in areas with strong sunlight and sharply draining soils. Its growth form and adaptations enable it to withstand seasonal droughts common in its native range.
The plant produces slender, segmented, green stems that act as the main photosynthetic surface, with true leaves reduced to minute scales. These stems are cylindrical and somewhat fleshy, storing moisture for dry periods. Small, star-shaped flowers in cream to pale yellow tones emerge along the stems during the warmer months, attracting insect pollinators. After flowering, elongated seed pods develop, each containing seeds with silky tufts for wind dispersal.
In cultivation, it is grown as an unusual succulent vine suitable for hanging baskets, tall pots, or climbing supports. Its segmented, trailing growth and drought tolerance make it a distinctive choice for collections of Madagascan succulents and other arid-climate plants.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to bright, indirect light; flowering and compact growth are encouraged by ample sunlight.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the mix to dry thoroughly between waterings. Increase slightly during active growth in warm weather.
- Humidity: Low to moderate humidity is preferred; ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues.
- Media: Use a sharply draining mix for succulents, incorporating coarse sand, gravel, or pumice.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
- Temperature: Keep in warm conditions; protect from frost and temperatures below 5°C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring, refreshing the mix and pruning back any excessive growth.
- Propagation: Best propagated from stem cuttings; allow cut ends to callus before planting in a well-draining medium.
