Davallia fejeensis 'Rabbit's Foot Fern'
check_circle In Stock
Davallia fejeensis, commonly called the Rabbit's Foot Fern, is a fern species native to Fiji. It is recognised for its creeping rhizomes covered in soft, brown hairs that resemble a rabbit’s foot, which spread across the surface of pots or mounts. These rhizomes produce finely divided fronds of bright green, giving the plant a soft, lacy appearance. In nature, the species often grows on trees or rocks in shaded, humid environments. In cultivation, it is especially valued as a decorative hanging plant where the rhizomes can be displayed.
Distinctive Features
- Rhizomes: The most distinctive feature of this fern is its furry, creeping rhizomes that grow above the soil surface. These rhizomes are typically a light brown colour and have a soft, hairy texture, resembling rabbit's feet.
- Fronds: Delicate, lacy fronds that are typically 20-30cm long (approximately 8-12 inches). The fronds are a vibrant green colour and have a triangular shape with finely divided segments.
- Growth Habit: This Davallia has a spreading, epiphytic growth habit. It naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, using its rhizomes to cling to the bark. It can also be grown in hanging baskets or on shelves where its rhizomes can cascade gracefully.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
- Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: This Davallia appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the fronds regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this fern to cold draughts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This fern can be grown in a pot or mounted on a piece of bark or cork. Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter.
