Dendrobium aggregatum – Golden Cascade Orchid
Dendrobium aggregatum, also known as the Golden Cascade Orchid, is a breathtaking epiphytic orchid native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. This species is renowned for its vibrant golden-yellow flowers, which bloom in cascading clusters, creating a striking visual display. It thrives in warm, humid environments and requires a distinct dry rest period to encourage blooming.
Distinctive Features
- Golden-yellow blooms: Produces abundant clusters of bright, golden-yellow flowers with a darker orange lip, giving a stunning cascading effect.
- Pseudobulbs: Short, plump pseudobulbs store water and nutrients, allowing the plant to withstand dry conditions.
- Seasonal growth cycle: Requires a dry winter rest to initiate flowering, followed by vigorous vegetative growth in the warmer months.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun; too much shade can reduce flowering.
- Water: Requires regular watering during the growing season but needs a dry period in winter to stimulate flowering.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (50–70%) but can tolerate drier conditions with adequate misting.
- Temperature: Warm-growing orchid, ideal temperatures range from 18–30°C, with a slight drop at night.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced orchid fertiliser weekly during the growing season; reduce feeding during the dry period.
- Potting: Grows best mounted on bark or in a slatted basket with coarse orchid media for excellent drainage.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by division, separating mature pseudobulbs with active growth.
Additional Notes
- Flowers typically last for about 2–3 weeks but are non-fragrant.
- Best displayed mounted to replicate natural growing conditions.
- Non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with animals.
Dendrobium aggregatum is a rewarding orchid for enthusiasts who can provide its distinct seasonal care needs. Its cascading golden blooms make it a showstopper in any collection, especially when displayed in hanging baskets or mounted setups.
