Dendrobium linguiforme is a lithophytic orchid native to eastern Australia, where it typically grows on rocky outcrops and exposed cliff faces in open forests and woodlands. It is often found in coastal and tableland regions of New South Wales and southern Queensland. This species forms dense mats of flattened, fleshy stems and short, thick leaves resembling a tongue, which inspired the species name. It usually flowers in late winter to early spring, producing numerous small, pale cream to yellowish flowers with a contrasting purple labellum.
Distinctive features:
- Short, tongue-shaped leaves
- Creeping rhizomes with crowded pseudobulbs
- Small flowers with creamy sepals and petals and a purple-marked labellum
- Prefers exposed, sunlit habitats on rocky substrates
- Fragrant blooms appearing in clusters during late winter to spring
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in bright conditions, tolerates full sun with adequate air movement
- Water: Moderate watering during the growing season, reduced in winter
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity; good air circulation is essential
- Media: Best mounted on cork or hardwood; can also grow in coarse, well-drained mix
- Temperature: Tolerant of a wide range, but prefers 10–30 °C
- Fertiliser: Fortnightly feed during active growth with a balanced orchid fertiliser
