The Exquisite Orchid: A Fragrant Delight
Dendrobium parishii '6 eyes' is a truly captivating orchid species that is sure to enchant you with its exquisite, fragrant flowers. This stunning orchid is native to Southeast Asia and is a prized addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Slender, cane-like pseudobulbs that are typically 20-40cm long (approximately 8-16 inches). The pseudobulbs store water and nutrients, allowing the orchid to thrive in its epiphytic environment.
- Leaves: Lance-shaped, light green leaves that are typically 5-10cm long (approximately 2-4 inches). The leaves are arranged alternately along the pseudobulbs.
- Flowers: Produces stunning, fragrant flowers that are typically 5-7cm in diameter (approximately 2-3 inches). The flowers are a beautiful shade of lavender-pink with a darker lip and a distinctive "eye" pattern. The '6 eyes' variety is particularly sought-after for its prominent eye markings.
- Growth Habit: This Dendrobium is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces. It can be grown in a pot with a well-draining orchid mix or mounted on a piece of bark or cork.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the potting mix or mount is almost dry. Allow excess water to drain away completely. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This orchid appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser, diluted to half strength, every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining orchid potting mix.

- Dendrobium parishii '6 eyes' is a rewarding orchid to grow, with its stunning flowers and delightful fragrance.
