Unmatched Size and Spectacular Display
Dendrobium smillieae is native to tropical northern Australia and parts of New Guinea, where it thrives in lowland and monsoonal forests. Known for producing enormous, robust canes and vibrant racemes of pink or purple flowers, it’s one of the most dramatic members of the genus. These plants offered here are exceptionally large and mature—sizes rarely available in cultivation.
Distinctive Features
- Massive Canes: Forms tall, thick, bamboo-like pseudobulbs that can exceed 2 metres in height under ideal conditions.
- Vivid Floral Racemes: Bears dense clusters of magenta to purplish-pink flowers along the upper canes, typically in late spring or summer.
- Clumping Habit: Develops into a large, multi-caned specimen with age, forming an impressive architectural feature.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright filtered light or morning sun; protect from harsh midday exposure in hot climates.
- Water: Water generously during active growth in warmer months; reduce watering slightly during cooler, dormant periods.
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity—ideal for tropical or greenhouse environments.
- Media: Well-draining orchid mix with bark, perlite, and a small amount of sphagnum moss works well.
- Temperature: Warm to intermediate grower; ideal range is 15–30 °C, with no exposure to frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser fortnightly during spring and summer; reduce feeding in winter.
- Repotting: Best repotted every 2–3 years or once the clump outgrows the container.
