The Chain Orchid: A Waterfall of Blooms
Coelogyne wenzelii (syn. Dendrochilum wenzellii) is a truly captivating orchid species renowned for its cascading chains of fragrant flowers. This exquisite epiphyte is native to Southeast Asia and is a prized addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Slender, lance-shaped leaves that are typically 15-25cm long (approximately 6-10 inches). The leaves are a vibrant green colour and have a slightly pleated texture.
- Flowers: Produces long, pendulous chains of small, fragrant flowers that are typically white or cream in colour. The flowers have a delicate, sweet fragrance and bloom in the spring and summer.
- Growth Habit: This Coelogyne has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows from a series of pseudobulbs connected by a rhizome. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This Coelogyne appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical orchid to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot or mounted on a piece of bark or cork. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Coelogyne wenzelii is a relatively easy orchid to care for, making it a rewarding plant for both novice and experienced growers.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. A well-ventilated environment is crucial for healthy orchid growth.
- This Coelogyne can be propagated through division of the pseudobulbs.
