check_circle In Stock
*Deuterocohnia brevifolia* (Large Form) is a compact, ground-hugging bromeliad native to Argentina and Bolivia. This robust, xerophytic species thrives in arid conditions, forming dense, spiky rosettes that create impressive mats over time. The larger form of this species features broader and more pronounced foliage, making it an excellent choice for collectors and drought-tolerant gardens.
Distinctive Features
- Rosette Growth: Forms tight, compact rosettes of spiky, triangular leaves that spread into large colonies over time.
- Thick, Greenish-Grey Leaves: Succulent, rigid leaves with serrated edges that provide excellent drought resistance.
- Slow Growth & Longevity: A long-lived species that gradually expands, making it an ideal ground cover for rock gardens and arid landscapes.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; brighter conditions enhance its compact form and vibrant colour.
- Water: Extremely drought-tolerant; water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering.
- Humidity: Thrives in low humidity but can adapt to higher humidity with excellent drainage.
- Media: Well-draining, gritty soil mix with sand, pumice, or perlite to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Hardy to around -4°C but prefers warm temperatures above 10°C for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Requires minimal feeding; a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser once in spring and summer is sufficient.
- Repotting: Rarely needs repotting; only when clumps become overcrowded or soil becomes depleted.
Additional Notes
- Excellent for xeriscaping and rock gardens due to its drought resistance and compact growth.
- Non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with animals.
- Can be propagated by division, as offsets gradually form around the base of mature rosettes.
With its striking form and resilience, *Deuterocohnia brevifolia* (Large Form) is a standout choice for arid landscapes and collectors of rare bromeliads. Its ability to form dense, spiky mats over time makes it both visually striking and functionally valuable in dry, rocky environments.
