cancel Sold out
Dieffenbachia amoena 'Compacta' is a cultivated form of the large-growing Dieffenbachia amoena, a species native to tropical regions of South America. The Compacta selection is characterised by shorter, denser growth compared to the typical form, with broad, glossy leaves patterned in green and cream. Like other Dieffenbachia, it develops a cane-like stem with leaves arranged alternately, and in maturity may form clusters of shoots from the base. While flowers may occasionally appear, it is mostly grown for its foliage.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Large, oblong-shaped leaves with a vibrant green base and creamy white variegation. The leaves have a slightly glossy texture and prominent veins, adding to their visual appeal.
- Growth Habit: This Dieffenbachia has a compact, upright growth habit. It typically reaches a height of 45-60cm (18-24 inches) and forms a dense, colourful display.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to be cautious.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Avoid exposing this Dieffenbachia to cold draughts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Pruning: You can prune this Dieffenbachia to maintain its shape and size. Pruning can also encourage bushier growth.
- Propagation: This Dieffenbachia can be propagated through stem cuttings. Simply remove a healthy stem, allow it to callus over, and then place it in water or well-draining soil. Roots will typically form within a few weeks.
Additional Notes
- Caution: The sap of this Dieffenbachia can be irritating to the skin and eyes. It is best to wear gloves when handling this plant. It is also toxic to pets if ingested.
