Dionaea muscipula 'Crenata' – Winter Dormant - Venus Flytrap

Dionaea muscipula ‘Crenata’ is a distinctive Venus Flytrap clone characterised by its shortened, scalloped marginal teeth and compact, symmetrical trap form.

Unlike standard Venus Flytraps with long marginal lashes, ‘Crenata’ produces traps with reduced, triangular teeth that give the trap margins a crenulated or saw-like appearance. Trap size is typically small to medium, with a neat, uniform look across the plant.

Trap Form & Appearance

The defining feature of ‘Crenata’ is its modified marginal teeth rather than trap size. Traps usually retain a classic bilobed shape, with the altered teeth providing visual interest without extreme deformation. Tooth expression is generally stable across seasons.

Colour Notes

Although primarily grown for its unique tooth form, ‘Crenata’ is also capable of developing excellent colour. Under strong light the trap interiors develop rich red pigmentation, and many plants become even more intensely coloured during winter dormancy, often displaying deep red traps that contrast beautifully with the compact green foliage.

Winter Dormancy

These plants are currently in their natural winter dormancy. During this period they may have fewer active traps, shorter leaves, and some older traps may blacken and die back. This is a normal and essential part of the Venus Flytrap's annual growth cycle. Each plant has a healthy rhizome and will resume vigorous growth as temperatures warm in spring.

Growth Notes

‘Crenata’ is a steady-growing clone that maintains its characteristic tooth shape as it matures. As with all Venus Flytraps, seasonal changes in trap size and colour are normal, particularly between active summer growth and cooler periods.
