Dionaea muscipula 'Upright' – Upright Venus Flytrap

Dionaea muscipula ‘Upright’ is a selected Venus Flytrap clone grown for its vertical leaf posture. During active growth, its elongated petioles hold the traps above the growing medium, producing a more upright appearance than flatter, spreading forms.

Clone Characteristics

• Growth habit: Upright growth with elongated petioles holding the traps above the centre of the rosette.
• Trap form: Small to medium-sized traps retaining a classic bilobed shape and normal marginal cilia.
• Colour: Generally green to lightly blushed, with red pigmentation developing inside the traps under strong light.
• Primary feature: Selected for its vertical posture rather than unusual teeth, intense colour or oversized traps.
• Seasonal expression: The upright habit is normally most apparent during active growth. Individual leaves and traps may be held at different angles.

Seasonal Appearance

Venus Flytraps naturally produce different types of leaves throughout the year. During active growth, ‘Upright’ develops longer petioles and holds its traps higher above the growing medium. The degree of vertical growth varies with light, temperature, maturity and the stage of the growing season.

During winter dormancy, growth becomes lower and more compact. The plant may have shorter leaves, smaller traps, fewer active leaves and some blackening of older growth. This seasonal dieback is normal. The living plant remains below and around the growing point and resumes stronger growth as conditions warm in spring.

The plant supplied may therefore display a more compact posture than the photographs depending on the time of year.

Care

• Light: Grow outdoors in a sunny position. Strong light supports compact, sturdy growth and helps prevent weak or excessively stretched leaves.
• Water: Use rainwater, distilled water or reverse osmosis water. Do not use ordinary tap water unless it is known to contain very low levels of dissolved minerals.
• Watering method: During active growth, stand the pot in a shallow tray of suitable water and do not allow the growing medium to dry out. Reduce the water level during winter dormancy, but keep the medium damp.
• Growing medium: Use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix, such as sphagnum peat combined with perlite or silica sand. Do not use ordinary potting mix.
• Feeding: Plants grown outdoors will normally catch enough insects without assistance. Do not apply standard plant fertilisers or repeatedly trigger the traps.
• Dormancy: Venus Flytraps are temperate plants with a natural winter resting period. Protect potted plants from severe or prolonged freezing conditions.
