Dionaea muscipula - Venus Fly Trap
cancel Sold out
Dionaea muscipula is native to nutrient-poor bogs and savannahs of the southeastern United States, particularly North and South Carolina. This legendary carnivorous plant is world-renowned for its specialised trapping mechanism—modified leaves that snap shut when trigger hairs are stimulated by unsuspecting prey.
Distinctive Features
- Leaf Traps: The modified leaves form jaw-like lobes lined with sensitive trigger hairs and marginal “teeth” that interlock when closed.
- Flowers: Small white blooms emerge on tall scapes in spring to avoid interfering with trap function.
- Growth Habit: Forms a compact rosette of ground-hugging traps; may slowly multiply through division.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright filtered sun to full sun; at least 4–6 hours of direct light promotes strong trap colouration.
- Water: Must be kept constantly moist with pure rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water—never tap water.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is ideal, particularly during active growing periods.
- Media: Requires nutrient-poor substrate such as sphagnum peat moss mixed with perlite or silica sand—avoid fertilised soils.
- Temperature: Thrives between 20–30 °C in summer; tolerates down to 5 °C during winter dormancy.
- Fertiliser: Not recommended—plants obtain nutrients from captured prey. Supplemental feeding is unnecessary if insects are available.
- Repotting: Every 1–2 years in spring using fresh carnivorous plant mix to prevent media breakdown and salt build-up.
- Enters winter dormancy in cooler months; traps may blacken and die back—reduce watering and keep cool until spring growth resumes.
