Dischidia nummularia 'Dragon Jade' - The Button Vine
The Button Vine: A Unique Epiphytic Gem
Dischidia nummularia 'Dragon Jade' is a delightful epiphytic plant known for its unique, button-like leaves and cascading growth habit. This charming variety is native to Southeast Asia and is a wonderful addition to any indoor garden, especially for those who appreciate the beauty of unusual foliage.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, round, button-like leaves that are typically 1-2cm in diameter (approximately 0.5-1 inch). The leaves have a vibrant green colour and a slightly succulent texture.
- Flowers: Produces tiny, inconspicuous flowers that are white or pale pink in colour. While the flowers are not the main attraction, they add a touch of delicate beauty to this fascinating plant.
- Growth Habit: This Dischidia has a cascading, vining growth habit. It thrives when grown in a hanging basket or allowed to trail over a shelf or other support. In its natural habitat, it grows on trees, using its aerial roots to cling to the bark.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. As epiphytes, Dischidias are sensitive to overwatering, so it's important to avoid soggy conditions.
- Humidity: This Dischidia appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser, diluted to half strength, monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining epiphyte potting mix. A mix formulated for orchids or bromeliads works well.

- Dischidia nummularia 'Dragon Jade' is generally easy to care for, making it a rewarding plant for both novice and experienced growers.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. A well-ventilated environment is crucial for healthy Dischidia growth.
