Dischidia platyphylla 'Solomon Islands' is a lesser-seen form of this unique species, endemic to humid lowland forests in parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Like many members of the Apocynaceae family, it exhibits specialised growth habits suited to life as an epiphyte. This form is particularly valued for its oversized, flattened leaves that cling tightly to host surfaces, resembling shingles.
Distinctive Features
- Shingle-style leaves: Foliage grows tightly flattened against substrates, adapting to vertical surfaces such as tree trunks or moss poles.
- Pale clustered buds: The inflorescences emerge in tight clusters, often a soft cream or pinkish tone, creating a striking contrast with the foliage.
- Adventitious root formation: Nodes along the stem produce roots readily, aiding both climbing and propagation.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which may scorch leaves.
- Water: Water when the top layer of the medium dries. Do not allow to remain soggy – roots are prone to rot if overwatered.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity (above 60%). Suitable for terrariums, bathrooms, or greenhouses.
- Media: Mount on cork bark or use a chunky, free-draining orchid-style mix if grown in a pot.
- Temperature: Enjoys warm conditions between 18–30°C. Protect from chills below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a dilute, balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the warmer months.
- Repotting: Minimal need if mounted; if potted, refresh the media every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the container.
Additional Notes
- This species is sometimes associated with ant symbiosis in the wild, though not essential in cultivation.
- It is closely allied to Hoya, sharing similar floral structure and growth preferences, but with more leaf surface adaptation.
- Challenging to maintain outside ideal conditions: Dischidia platyphylla 'Solomon Islands' can be slow to establish and prone to decline if not given consistent warmth, humidity, and airflow. It is best suited to experienced growers or controlled environments such as terrariums and tropical greenhouses.
