Drosera filiformis
cancel Sold out
Drosera filiformis, commonly known as the Threadleaf Sundew, is an elegant carnivorous plant forming upright, grass-like leaves covered in glistening mucilage. Native to North America, this species traps small insects along its long, red-tinged leaves and is one of the most striking temperate sundews to grow outdoors in full sun. Perfect for bog gardens or cool outdoor conditions in pots or trays of rainwater.
Care
- Light: Full sun to bright light; strong light enhances its red colour and dew production.
- Water: Keep wet at all times using the tray method. Use rainwater, distilled, or reverse-osmosis water only.
- Temperature: Prefers cool to warm temperate climates. Tolerates winter dormancy under 0 °C.
- Media: 50 % sphagnum peat and 50 % coarse sand or perlite. Avoid fertilisers or potting mixes.
- Feeding: Catches small insects naturally. Supplemental feeding is optional but avoid chemical fertiliser.
- Dormancy: Dies back to the crown in winter; new leaves emerge in spring.
Key Characteristics
- Leaf type: Long, thread-like leaves up to 25 cm covered in sticky glands
- Colour: Green to deep red depending on sunlight
- Flowers: Tall pink to lavender blooms in summer
- Growth habit: Erect rosette; forms clumps over time
