Dudleya species (WA Prohibited)
release_alert Low Stock - 2 available
Dudleya is a genus of succulents native to the western parts of North America, particularly California and Baja California, where they often grow on coastal bluffs, rocky outcrops, and desert slopes. These plants form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often covered with a natural powdery coating that protects them from sun and water loss. Many species have leaves in shades of green, blue-grey, or chalky white, with some taking on red or pink tones during stress or seasonal changes. In spring to early summer, Dudleyas send up tall flower stalks that bear clusters of star-shaped blooms, usually in yellow, orange, or red. Their natural habitats are frequently exposed and nutrient-poor, and some species are adapted to near-vertical cliff faces where rainfall quickly drains away.
Care Tips:
- Light – Provide bright light to full sun; outdoor conditions are ideal in mild climates.
- Water – Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely; many species benefit from a dry rest period in summer.
- Humidity – Tolerates low humidity well.
- Media – Use a gritty, free-draining mix with a high mineral content, mimicking rocky native soils.
- Temperature – Performs best in temperate climates; protect from prolonged frost or heavy summer rainfall.
- Fertiliser – Apply a dilute, balanced fertiliser sparingly during active growth.
- Repotting – Repot only when necessary; many species prefer to remain undisturbed and can be long-lived in one container.
