Echinocactus platyacanthus – Blue Giant Barrel Cactus

Echinocactus platyacanthus, commonly known as the Blue Giant Barrel Cactus, is a slow-growing Mexican species with a heavy, deeply ribbed stem and prominent reddish-brown spines.

The photographs show representative plants from the current batch. Each plant will vary naturally in shape, colour and spine development. The decorative outer pot shown in the photographs is not included.

Distinctive Features

• Growth habit: Initially rounded, becoming increasingly barrel-shaped and eventually columnar with age
• Colour: Blue-green to grey-green body
• Spines: Strong reddish-brown spines that may change colour as they mature
• Ribs: Broad, deeply defined ribs that become more numerous as the plant develops
• Growth rate: Very slow-growing and exceptionally long-lived
• Flowers: Mature plants can produce yellow flowers around the crown
• Origin: Mexico

A Cactus for the Long Term

This species can eventually develop into an enormous barrel cactus, but it takes many decades to reach its mature dimensions. Young plants remain compact for a considerable time, making them suitable for pot culture while they slowly develop their characteristic ribs, colouring and formidable spines.

Natural Variation

Individual plants will vary in diameter, height, body colour and spine length. Minor marks, old areoles and small areas of natural corking may be present and are normal for nursery-grown cacti.

Care

• Light: Grow in very bright light to direct sun. Gradually acclimatise the plant before exposing it to strong sunlight.
• Water: Water thoroughly during warm, active growth, then allow the media to dry completely before watering again.
• Winter: Keep considerably drier during cool weather. Avoid allowing the plant to remain cold and wet.
• Media: Use a coarse, mineral-rich cactus mix with excellent drainage.
• Temperature: Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
• Fertiliser: Feed lightly during active growth using a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser.
• Repotting: Repot only when necessary, preferably during the warmer months. Use a stable pot to accommodate the plant’s increasing weight.

Handling

This cactus has long, rigid spines. Wear suitable gloves when handling and position it away from children, pets and high-traffic areas.

Transport Note

Plants will be packed carefully. Minor spine movement or small cosmetic marks may occur during transport and will not affect the health of the plant.
