Echinocereus subinermis

Echinocereus subinermis is a cactus species native to central and northern Mexico, particularly in the states of Durango, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí. It grows in semi-arid environments, often on rocky limestone slopes or open scrubland, where drainage is sharp and rainfall sparse. This species has a relatively short columnar form and is known for its broad, yellow flowers which appear in late spring to early summer.

Distinctive features:

• Stems are cylindrical, pale green, and usually solitary or in small clusters
• Ribs are pronounced with few or no spines, especially on older plants
• Flowers are large, funnel-shaped, and yellow, often with greenish outer tepals
• Fruits are green to reddish and may be slightly spiny

Care Tips:

• Light: Requires full sun to light shade; prefers several hours of direct sunlight daily
• Water: Water sparingly during active growth; allow soil to dry fully between waterings
• Humidity: Tolerant of dry air; does not require added humidity
• Media: Use a coarse, free-draining cactus mix with added grit or pumice
• Temperature: Best kept above 5 °C; tolerates short periods near freezing if dry
• Fertiliser: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted cactus fertiliser
• Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring, using care not to damage shallow roots
