Epiphyllum ackermannii
check_circle In Stock
Epiphyllum ackermannii is a cactus species native to the cloud forests of southern Mexico and Central America, where it grows along trees and rocks in humid environments. Unlike desert-dwelling cacti, this species has flattened, leaf-like stems that allow it to capture light under shaded forest canopies. It is widely cultivated for its large, funnel-shaped flowers, which are usually red and appear in spring and summer, often opening during the day. These flowers are followed by small, fleshy fruits.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; avoid direct midday sun which can scorch stems.
- Water: Keep evenly moist during the growing season, reducing watering in winter.
- Media: Best in a coarse, well-draining mix with added organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage flowering.
- Temperature: Grows well in warm conditions but should be protected from temperatures below 10°C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years to refresh media and allow for continued growth.
