Epiphyllum 'Strictum' is a long-established orchid cactus hybrid, thought to have originated from species native to Central America. It is well known for its impressive night-blooming flowers, which open fully after dusk. The blooms are large and star-shaped, composed of long, slender petals in white, sometimes tinged faintly with green or cream, and accented by yellow stamens and a pinkish tube. Each flower is short-lived, usually lasting only a single night, but plants can produce multiple blooms over the season.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid strong midday sun to prevent stem scorch.
- Water: Water regularly in the growing season, keeping the mix slightly moist; reduce in winter when growth slows.
- Media: Use a coarse, well-draining mix enriched with organic matter to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced fertiliser through spring and summer, switching to a higher potassium blend prior to blooming.
- Temperature: Best kept in warm conditions, with protection from prolonged cold below 10°C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, refreshing the mix to support healthy root growth.
