Euphorbia alluaudii f. cristata is a crested form of alluaudii, a succulent shrub species native to southern Madagascar, where it grows in dry, deciduous thickets and spiny forest on limestone or rocky substrates. This unusual forma develops fan-shaped, undulating growth along its stem tips, replacing the typical upright branching habit of the species. The crests are grey-green to bluish in colour and may flush reddish under stress or strong sun. Unlike many Euphorbias, it bears few spines, and its reduced leaves are short-lived. Cyathia are rarely produced in the crested form and may not appear consistently in cultivation.
Care Tips:
- Light – Requires bright indirect light or filtered sun; protect crests from intense midday heat
- Water – Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry completely between waterings
- Humidity – Performs best in dry environments; ensure good airflow to reduce rot risk
- Media – Use a sharply draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice or coarse sand
- Temperature – Maintain above 12°C; protect from frost and cold drafts
- Fertiliser – Apply diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season
- Repotting – Handle gently during repotting due to the fragile nature of the crests
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
