Euphorbia clandestina is a geophytic succulent species endemic to South Africa, specifically restricted to the Eastern Cape province. It is found in dry, stony renosterveld and succulent thicket vegetation, often emerging after seasonal rains. The plant produces slender, columnar stems from a subterranean tuberous rootstock, with reduced or absent leaves and inconspicuous greenish cyathia held close to the stem. Much of the year, it remains nearly invisible above ground, especially during dormancy, hence the epithet “clandestina.”
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires full sun to light shade; bright light is essential for compact growth
- Water: Water during active summer growth and withhold entirely during winter dormancy
- Humidity: Prefers dry air and excellent ventilation
- Media: Use a sandy, mineral-based mix with rapid drainage
- Temperature: Thrives at 18–30 °C; avoid frost and prolonged cold
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted low-nitrogen feed during the growing season
- Repotting: Infrequently needed; take care not to damage the tuber when repotting
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
