Euphorbia francoisii is native to the arid southern regions of Madagascar and is admired for its diverse foliar patterns and flattened, geophytic growth form. These cultivated hybrids enhance the visual range with variable colours, leaf shapes, and marginal markings.
Distinctive Features
- Leaf Variety: Exhibits a striking array of foliage colours including burgundy, olive green, silver, and pink, often with intricate venation and variegation.
- Flowers: Small and understated cyathia, typically yellow-green to reddish, appearing sporadically throughout the warmer months.
- Growth Form: Low-growing, shrubby to sprawling succulent with a subtle caudex base, ideal for shallow pots or bonsai-style displays.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright filtered light or gentle morning sun; strong midday sun may bleach foliage.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry between waterings; reduce further in winter dormancy.
- Humidity: Tolerates dry air; avoid overly damp conditions to prevent root or stem rot.
- Media: Requires a sharply draining mix—use cactus/succulent blend with added mineral grit or perlite.
- Temperature: Best between 18–28 °C; protect from frost and cold draughts.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced, diluted fertiliser during active growth, monthly in spring and summer.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when outgrown; choose shallow containers to accommodate its caudex nature.
Additional Notes
- Each plant is genetically unique; hybrids may display unpredictable but attractive leaf forms and colours.
- Contains latex sap typical of the genus—avoid contact with skin and eyes.
