Euphorbia horrida var. nova is a robust, spiny succulent distinguished by its deeply ridged stems and prominent spine clusters. The species is native to arid regions of South Africa, particularly within the Karoo biome, where it grows in rocky, mineral-rich soils exposed to intense sunlight. This variety is known for its thicker stems and slightly more irregular rib formation compared to the typical form. Stem colour ranges from glaucous green to grey-blue, often developing reddish tones under strong light. The paired spines along the ribs are stout and upright, giving it a cactus-like appearance. Small yellow-green cyathia may be produced near the stem tips during warm weather.
Care Tips:
- Light – Requires full sun to maintain form and encourage strong spine development
- Water – Water infrequently; allow soil to dry completely between waterings
- Humidity – Performs best in dry conditions; sensitive to excessive moisture
- Media – Needs a sharply draining mix with added grit or pumice
- Temperature – Keep above 10°C; avoid prolonged cold or damp
- Fertiliser – Use diluted cactus fertiliser during the active growth period
- Repotting – Repot every few years or when necessary for growth or soil renewal
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
