The Miniature Crown of Thorns: A Scarlet Gem
Euphorbia milii 'Lucky Lady' is a captivating miniature succulent that will add a burst of colour to your home with its vibrant scarlet red bracts. This easy-to-care-for plant is a popular choice for adding a touch of the tropics to any space, especially where space is limited.
Distinctive Features
- Stems: Thick, fleshy stems that are typically grey-green in colour and armed with sharp thorns. The stems of this miniature cultivar are more compact than the standard Euphorbia milii, typically growing up to 30cm (12 inches) tall.
- Bracts: Produces an abundance of colourful bracts that surround the small, inconspicuous flowers. 'Lucky Lady' is particularly prized for its bright scarlet red bracts, which create a stunning display.
- Growth Habit: This Euphorbia has a bushy, upright growth habit. It can be pruned to maintain a desired shape and size.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but intense afternoon sun can scorch the stems.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to be cautious.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. You can also add perlite or pumice to improve drainage.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Avoid exposing this plant to cold draughts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted succulent fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Propagation: This Euphorbia can be propagated through stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callus over before planting in well-draining soil.
