check_circle In Stock
Ferocactus schwarzii, commonly known as Schwarz's Barrel Cactus, is a solitary barrel cactus native to the Mexican state of Sinaloa. This species is characterized by its globular to ellipsoidal bright green stems, which can reach up to 80 centimetres in height and 50 centimetres in diameter. Notably, as the cactus matures, it tends to become nearly spineless, giving it a distinctive appearance among barrel cacti.
Distinctive Features
- Stem Structure: Exhibits 13 to 19 sharp-edged ribs that are initially rounded, providing a robust framework.
- Spination: Young plants typically have 1 to 5 yellow spines that curve slightly backward and protrude outward. These spines grey with age and can range from 0.5 to 5.5 centimetres in length. As the cactus ages, the number of spines decreases, often resulting in a nearly spineless mature plant.
- Flowers: Produces yellow flowers that form a ring around the crown. These flowers are up to 5 centimetres long and 4 centimetres in diameter, adding a vibrant touch to its appearance.
- Fruits: Develops nearly spherical, green-olive fruits measuring 1.3 to 2 centimetres in length. These fruits dry out and split lengthwise upon maturation.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in full sun exposure, requiring ample direct sunlight to maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
- Water: Prefers minimal watering; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: Adapted to arid environments, it prefers low humidity levels.
- Media: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to mimic its natural desert habitat.
- Temperature: Favors warm temperatures and can tolerate brief periods of cooler temperatures, but should be protected from frost.
- Fertiliser: During the growing season (spring and summer), apply a diluted cactus fertiliser monthly to support healthy growth.
- Repotting: Due to its slow growth, repotting is seldom necessary. When repotting, handle with care to avoid damaging the plant.
