Graptopetalum paraguayense ssp. bernalense Variegata
check_circle In Stock
Graptopetalum bernalense, a compact member of the Ghost Plant group, is native to the state of Tamaulipas in north-eastern Mexico. It grows on cool, north-facing porphyry outcrops between roughly 700 and 800 m elevation, where thin, stony soils, bright light and intermittent moisture shape its habit and colour.
Rosettes are small and neatly geometric, typically 2.5–6 cm across, set on slender, decumbent stems that root and branch to form loose mats over rock. Leaves are thick with a waxy bloom, shifting from grey-green to cream or pinkish tones under stronger light and lean substrates. The protective bloom marks easily with handling, so a gentle touch preserves the surface.
Inflorescences rise on wiry stalks in the growing season, carrying star-shaped flowers that are white to cream with fine red spotting on the petals. Plants offset freely and respond well to leaf and stem propagation, making this subspecies a reliable choice for collectors who enjoy multiplying plants from their own stock.
Care Tips:
- Light Provide bright light to full sun, with brief acclimation outdoors. Indoor culture thrives by a north- or east-facing window with several hours of direct light.
- Water Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry through. Reduce markedly in the coolest months; avoid water sitting in rosettes during cold spells.
- Humidity Prefers low to moderate humidity with good air movement.
- Media Use a very free-draining mineral mix (e.g., 60–80% pumice, scoria, or coarse grit with a lean organic component).
- Temperature Ideal 10–28 °C. Protect from frost; brief dips to about 5 °C are tolerated if kept dry.
- Fertiliser Light feeding during active growth only, at quarter-strength with a low-nitrogen formulation.
- Repotting Repot in spring when the cluster fills the pot; refresh the mineral fraction each time to maintain porosity.
