Gymnocalycium mihanovichii forma rubra – The Colourful Moon Cactus
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii forma rubra, commonly known as the Red Moon Cactus, is a visually stunning, chlorophyll-deficient cactus that displays vibrant red, orange, yellow, or even pink hues. Native to South America, particularly Paraguay and Argentina, this plant cannot survive on its own and is typically grafted onto a green rootstock, such as *Hylocereus*, to sustain itself. It has gained popularity due to its unique colours and easy maintenance, making it an excellent choice for beginners.
Distinctive Features
- Brilliant Colours: Lacks chlorophyll, leading to striking shades of red, yellow, orange, or pink.
- Grafted Growth: Requires a host plant (typically *Hylocereus*) for survival.
- Compact Size: Typically remains small, making it ideal for indoor settings and windowsills.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid harsh direct sunlight to prevent scorching.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering.
- Humidity: Adapts well to average household humidity levels.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18°C-25°C; protect from cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted cactus fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
- Potting: Requires well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
- Propagation: Cannot be propagated directly; must be regrafted onto a new rootstock.
Additional Notes
- Overwatering is the most common cause of issues; ensure soil is dry before watering.
- Grafted cacti may have a shorter lifespan than self-sustaining species.
- Non-toxic to pets, but should not be ingested.
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii forma rubra is a striking, easy-to-care-for cactus that adds a splash of colour to any space. Due to its reliance on a grafting rootstock, it requires minimal care and is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced collectors.
