Haworthia 'Ice City'
check_circle In Stock
Haworthia 'Ice City' is a cultivated hybrid appreciated for its rosettes with frosted, glassy leaf tips that give the plant a cool, crystalline appearance. Although its precise parentage is not formally documented, it belongs to a group of hybrids derived from South African Haworthia species, which naturally inhabit shallow soils and rocky outcrops in semi-arid regions. In these environments, the plants often remain partly buried, conserving water and shielding themselves from intense sunlight.
The leaves of 'Ice City' are thick and fleshy, with clear windowed surfaces that allow light to enter deep into the tissue. This trait reflects the survival strategies of its wild relatives, enabling photosynthesis while the plant body stays protected beneath the soil surface. The hybrid enhances this feature, creating a striking glassy texture that plays with light and depth when viewed from above.
Like other Haworthia, 'Ice City' produces wiry flower stalks during the warmer months, carrying small white, tubular blooms faintly striped with green or brown. While the flowers are understated, they follow the seasonal cycle of the genus, timed to brief periods of favourable conditions in its ancestral habitats. In cultivation, the plant is admired mainly for its slow, tidy rosettes and distinctive leaf windows.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; tolerates short periods of gentle morning sun.
- Water: Water thoroughly but allow soil to dry before reapplying; reduce in winter.
- Media: Plant in a coarse, free-draining succulent mix.
- Temperature: Best between 10–28 °C; keep above 5 °C.
- Fertiliser: Apply diluted succulent fertiliser monthly during active growth.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years to refresh soil and encourage healthy roots.
