Haworthia limifolia variegata – Rippled Succulent with Marbled Leaves
Haworthia limifolia variegata is a visually captivating succulent native to the rocky hills of southern Africa, particularly within KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Mozambique. A naturally occurring variegated form, it stands out due to its sculptural, ridged foliage accentuated by cream to yellow marbling. Slow-growing and compact, this cultivar is highly prized by collectors for its architectural symmetry and subtle colour variation.
Distinctive Features
- Variegated Leaves: Each leaf displays a striking blend of green with cream or yellow marbled streaks, which differ from plant to plant.
- Textured Surface: Prominent horizontal ridges give the leaves a washboard-like feel, contributing to its common name ‘Fairy Washboard’.
- Compact Rosette: It forms neat, spiralled rosettes rarely exceeding 10 cm in diameter, making it ideal for small spaces and container growing.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Tolerates some direct sun but can scorch under intense midday rays.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to fully dry out between waterings. Very sensitive to overwatering.
- Humidity: Prefers drier air; average indoor humidity is sufficient.
- Media: Use a well-draining succulent mix with added grit or perlite to avoid root rot.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–26°C. Protect from frost and prolonged exposure below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser once monthly during active growth in spring and summer.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Choose a shallow pot with ample drainage.
Additional Notes
- This variety is a cultivar, meaning its variegation may not always be passed on through offsets or seed.
- Non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for indoor environments with cats or dogs.
- Excellent choice for beginners due to its forgiving nature and pest resistance.
Haworthia limifolia variegata makes an elegant and low-maintenance addition to any succulent collection. Its unique ridged leaves and subtle variegation offer year-round interest, especially when placed in stylish containers that complement its sculptural form.
