Haworthia pygmaea f. crystallin
check_circle In Stock
Haworthia pygmaea f. crystallin is a recognised forma of Haworthia pygmaea, a species native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. In its natural environment, it grows in shallow rocky soils and often remains partially buried, with only the translucent leaf tips exposed above the surface. This growth strategy helps protect the plant from harsh sunlight and reduces water loss in its semi-arid habitat.
The leaves are thick, triangular, and arranged in a compact rosette. In the crystallin form, the leaf surfaces have particularly clear and glassy windows, giving the plant its name. These transparent areas allow light to penetrate deeper into the leaf tissue for photosynthesis while minimising exposure of the whole plant to the elements.
During the warmer months, slender inflorescences arise bearing small, tubular, white flowers lightly marked with green or brown. Like other Haworthia, the floral display is modest, with the plant being more valued for its distinctive leaf structure and growth form than its flowers.
Care Tips:
- Light: Enjoys bright but indirect light; tolerates some direct morning or late afternoon sun.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly before reapplying; reduce significantly in winter.
- Media: Needs a coarse, well-draining succulent mix with added mineral grit.
- Temperature: Prefers 10–28 °C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser during the active growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years to refresh soil and accommodate slow but steady root growth.
