Hippeastrum papilio 'Paradisian Red'
check_circle In Stock
Hippeastrum papillio 'Paradisian Red' is an exciting new cultivar developed by Paradisia of the Butterfly Amaryllis, from the species native to the Atlantic forests of southern Brazil. In the wild, the species grows in shaded, humid conditions on rocky outcrops or among leaf litter, with seasonal rains followed by a drier rest period. This cultivar retains the distinctive form of the species while showing a much deeper red presentation across the flowers.
The plant develops from a large bulb that produces broad, arching, strap-like leaves. Its flowers are notable for their bold red tones, with petals richly overlaid in burgundy to maroon, contrasted by pale green to cream bases and fine striping. The blooms open in succession from the tall scape, each trumpet-shaped flower displaying a strong symmetry and colour balance. Pollination in the wild is typically carried out by long-tongued insects, although in cultivation the flowers are valued primarily for display.
Growth follows the seasonal rhythm of the species, with active foliage and flowering during the warm, moist part of the cycle, followed by a rest that allows the bulb to replenish its reserves. In cultivation, Hippeastrum papillio 'Paradisian Red' is best maintained in a bright position with careful watering and a freely draining medium to protect the bulb from excessive moisture.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; some gentle direct sun is tolerated.
- Water: Water well during active growth, reducing gradually as the plant enters dormancy.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity suits the species, reflecting its forest origins.
- Media: A free-draining mix with organic matter and added grit is recommended.
- Fertiliser: Feed regularly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Best kept between 18–26°C; avoid exposure to frost.
- Repotting: Repot after the resting period when the bulb becomes crowded or offsets are produced.
