Holcoglossum subulifolium - The Awl-Leaved Orchid (Bare Root)
cancel Sold out
Holcoglossum subulifolium, commonly called the Awl-Leaved Orchid, is a small orchid native to parts of southern China and northern Vietnam. It typically grows on trees in montane forests, often at elevations of 800–1500 metres where humidity is consistently high and light conditions are dappled beneath the canopy.
The plant is characterised by its narrow, awl-shaped leaves which form a neat fan. These leaves are stiff and upright, allowing the orchid to capture light efficiently in its shaded habitat. Its roots are well adapted to attach firmly to bark, absorbing moisture and nutrients from rainfall and organic debris.
Flowers appear in clusters on short inflorescences, usually in spring. The blooms are white with a distinctively shaped lip that often shows yellow or purple markings. Pollination is carried out by insects, and in cultivation, the flowers are valued for their delicate form and seasonal display.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Short, awl-shaped leaves that are typically 3-5cm long (approximately 1-2 inches). The leaves are a vibrant green colour and have a slightly succulent texture.
- Flowers: Produces a cluster of 2-5 delicate flowers that are typically white or pale pink in colour. The flowers have a subtle fragrance and a unique shape, with a prominent lip that is often adorned with colourful markings.
- Growth Habit: This Holcoglossum has a compact, clumping growth habit. It typically reaches a height of 8-12cm (3-5 inches) and forms a dense clump of leaves and pseudobulbs.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This Holcoglossum appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate temperatures between 15-25°C (59-77°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this orchid to cold draughts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot or mounted on a piece of bark or cork. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix.
