Hoya acuta 'Variegata'
check_circle In Stock
Hoya acuta 'Variegata' is a variegated form of the widespread Southeast Asian species Hoya acuta, which is found across countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia in warm, humid forests. This cultivated form is recognised for its ornamental foliage, where the normally green, lance-shaped leaves are patterned with cream to yellow margins or splashes of variegation. When mature, it can also produce umbels of white to pale pink, star-shaped flowers with a darker pink corona, which emit a light fragrance.
Distinctive Features
- Leaf variegation: Leaves are thick, lanceolate, and leathery, featuring bright creamy margins and green centres. Some flush pale pink under high light conditions.
- Inflorescence: Star-shaped flowers form dense, spherical clusters. Petals are ivory to pale cream, with rose-pink coronas and a sweet, musky fragrance.
- Growth habit: Twining or trailing vine with flexible stems. Excellent for hanging baskets, mounted displays, or climbing on support structures.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light. Variegation intensifies with good light but avoid direct midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Allow the top few centimetres of substrate to dry before watering. Reduce frequency in winter months.
- Humidity: Tolerates standard household humidity but thrives in higher humidity environments (>60%).
- Media: Well-aerated mix with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat. Drainage is essential.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–28°C. Protect from cold drafts; sensitive to frost.
- Fertiliser: Feed fortnightly in the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser or orchid blend. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the container. Avoid overpotting to preserve flowering performance.
Additional Notes
- Flowering is encouraged by stable conditions, bright light, and being slightly root-bound. Bud drop may occur with sudden changes in environment.
- This plant produces latex when cut; wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
