Hoya archboldiana ‘Albomarginata’ – H246

Hoya archboldiana ‘Albomarginata’ – H246 is a rare variegated form of this large-leaved New Guinea species. It produces thick, elongated leaves with irregular cream margins and varying amounts of pale marbling.

The combination of substantial foliage, slow-growing variegation and the species’ unusually large bell-shaped flowers makes this a particularly worthwhile collector Hoya.

Care

• Light: Grow in bright, filtered light. Good light supports stronger growth and variegation, but protect the pale leaf margins from harsh afternoon sun.
• Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to partially dry before watering again. Do not leave the roots continually wet or allow the plant to remain severely dry for extended periods.
• Temperature: This is a warm-growing Hoya. Aim for approximately 20–30°C during active growth and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, particularly while new leaves are developing. Good air movement remains important.
• Media: Use a coarse, open Hoya mix that drains freely while retaining a small amount of moisture.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser at reduced strength during active growth.
• Support: Provide a trellis or other sturdy support for the developing vines and large leaves.

Maintaining the Variegation

Variegation will differ between individual leaves. Some may have narrow cream margins, while others develop broader sectors or extensive pale marbling. New leaves can also take time to harden and show their final colouring.

Watch for vines that repeatedly produce completely green leaves. Persistent reverted growth may be pruned back to the last clearly variegated node to prevent it from overtaking the slower variegated growth.

Flowering

Hoya archboldiana is known for producing some of the largest flowers in the genus. Mature plants require warmth, good light and established vines before flowering. Do not remove old peduncles, as they may produce flowers again.

Please note: This variegated form is slower than the standard green species. Leaf shape, markings and the amount of cream colouring will vary naturally between plants and as each plant matures.
