Hoya australis is a popular and easy-to-grow Hoya species that's native to Eastern Australia and some parts of Asia. It's known for its attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and forgiving nature, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced plant enthusiasts.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: The leaves of Hoya australis are typically oval-shaped, thick, and glossy with a waxy texture. They can vary in size and shape depending on the specific subspecies. Some varieties have variegated or speckled leaves.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that are typically white or pale pink with a red center. The flowers have a sweet, delicate fragrance, especially noticeable in the evenings.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya is a vining epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows on trees. It thrives when provided with a support to climb, such as a trellis or moss pole. It can also be grown in a hanging basket.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. While it can tolerate some shade, it will produce more flowers with brighter light.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix.
