Hoya australis 'Lisa'
check_circle In Stock
Hoya australis 'Lisa' is a variegated form of the Australian species Hoya australis, which grows naturally in coastal forests and rainforest edges of Queensland, the Northern Territory, and parts of Western Australia. This selection is recognised for its colourful foliage, with leaves marked by green, cream, and pink variegation that remains decorative throughout the year. Mature plants can also produce umbels of white, star-shaped flowers with red-centred coronas, which are sweetly fragrant and nectar-rich, attracting pollinators in the wild and adding seasonal interest in cultivation.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Broad, leathery leaves show off splashes of creamy yellow, light green, and pinkish hues when exposed to bright light.
- Flowers: Umbels of star-shaped, white flowers with a pink-red centre produce a heady fragrance, usually in warmer months.
- Growth habit: Vigorous trailing or twining growth, easily trained on supports or allowed to cascade from hanging baskets.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain variegation; will tolerate some direct morning sun.
- Water: Water moderately in active growth; allow the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity but is adaptable to standard indoor conditions.
- Media: Use a free-draining epiphytic mix – orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based substrates are ideal.
- Temperature: Best grown between 15–30 °C; protect from frost and cold draughts.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound; avoid over-potting to encourage blooming.
