Hoya callistophylla
check_circle In Stock
Hoya callistophylla is native to Borneo’s humid lowland forests and is renowned for its bold, graphic foliage. This epiphytic climber thrives in dappled light under the tropical canopy and has become a collector’s favourite due to its highly ornamental leaves and occasional clusters of fragrant blooms.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Large, thick lime-olive leaves with sharply contrasting dark green venation – particularly vibrant in strong light.
- Flowers: Clusters of pale yellow to caramel flowers with maroon-centred coronas; moderately fragrant and waxy in texture.
- Growth Habit: Vining epiphyte with a slow to moderate growth rate; will climb or trail depending on support provided.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, filtered light is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sun, which may scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the substrate to dry out halfway between waterings. Water less in cooler months.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity but tolerates moderate indoor levels with occasional misting or pebble trays.
- Media: A coarse, well-draining mix suited for epiphytes – orchid bark, perlite, and chunky coco coir are ideal.
- Temperature: Enjoys temperatures from 18–28°C; protect from frost and cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season; reduce feeding in winter.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the pot; avoid overpotting to maintain good airflow.
Additional Notes
- Blooms may be encouraged by ensuring ample light, a stable environment, and slight root restriction.
- Leaf veining becomes more pronounced under higher light intensity – a key feature for display.
