Hoya caudata 'Crassifolia' is a distinctive cultivar of Southeast Asian origin, valued for its robust growth and boldly veined foliage. This selection showcases unusually wide leaves with a dense, velvet-like surface that often develops reddish highlights in brighter light.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage texture: Thick, leathery leaves with a fine fuzzy coating and occasional flecking or mottling.
- Blooms: Star-shaped white to pale pink flowers with a fuzzy surface and maroon centre, usually forming in umbel clusters with a sweet but subtle scent.
- Growth habit: Slow-climbing or trailing epiphyte that can be trained onto supports or left to cascade in hanging containers.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate dappled sun; avoid prolonged full sun exposure which may scorch the foliage.
- Water: Allow the substrate to dry out between waterings; reduce frequency in cooler months.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity, especially during active growth or blooming.
- Media: Use a well-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark blended with perlite and coco coir.
- Temperature: Thrives between 16–28°C; protect from frost and sudden cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer; avoid overfeeding.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound; choose a snug pot to promote blooming.
