Hoya chinghungensis is a rare and relatively recent addition to the Hoya genus, native to Yunnan, China. This epiphytic species thrives in humid, forested environments, often clinging to trees or rocks. It is distinguished by its slender, lanceolate leaves and its stunning flowers, which feature a pale yellow to cream-coloured corolla with a contrasting dark red or maroon corona. The blooms are highly fragrant.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, ovate to lanceolate, and dark green, with a smooth, slightly fuzzy texture. The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stem and typically grow up to 4cm (1.6in) long and 2cm (0.8in) wide.
- Flowers: Borne in clusters of up to 15, each with a diameter of 1cm (0.4in). The flowers are a delicate pale yellow colour with a slightly darker yellow centre and have a subtle, sweet fragrance.
- Growth Habit: A naturally compact vining plant that typically grows up to 1.5m (5ft) long. It is an excellent choice for growing in hanging baskets or on small trellises, where its unique foliage can be showcased.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Misting the leaves regularly can help to increase humidity levels.
- Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 18-25°C (64-77°F). Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Fertilise once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
- Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer and root them in a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Hoya chinghungensis is a relatively slow-growing Hoya, but its unique foliage and beautiful flowers make it well worth the wait. Its compact growth habit makes it an excellent choice for those with limited space or who prefer smaller, more manageable plants.
- This captivating Hoya is a true gem for any plant enthusiast, adding a touch of elegance and natural beauty to any space. With its easy care requirements and visually appealing foliage, it is a great choice for both beginner and experienced plant enthusiasts.
