Hoya coronaria 'Red' is native to lowland forests of Southeast Asia, including Borneo and Sumatra, where it thrives as an epiphyte or scrambling climber. It is especially admired for its dense umbels of waxy, deep red flowers that emit a sweet fragrance, especially during the evening hours.
Distinctive Features
- Fleshy Foliage: Thick, ovate leaves with a robust, leathery texture and a glossy sheen.
- Showy Flowers: Deep crimson to burgundy flowers arranged in tight umbels, often sweetly scented.
- Vigorous Habit: A scrambling or twining vine that establishes readily in warm, moist environments.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates some morning sun. Avoid harsh afternoon rays.
- Water: Keep evenly moist during active growth; reduce watering in cooler months without allowing it to fully dry out.
- Humidity: Enjoys high humidity; benefits from regular misting or placement near a humidifier in dry interiors.
- Media: Use a well-aerated mix—ideally orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of organic matter.
- Temperature: Best grown between 18–28 °C. Sensitive to frost and cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season. Reduce or stop during dormancy.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, or when rootbound, to refresh media and encourage healthy growth.
Additional Notes
- This variety may take several years to flower from cutting, but rewards patient growers with stunning umbels.
- Blooms may appear more frequently if the plant is slightly root-bound and given bright, stable conditions.
