Hoya coronaria 'Red' – Velvety Crimson Blooms
Hoya coronaria 'Red' is a striking tropical vine native to the humid lowland forests of Southeast Asia. This robust cultivar stands out with its large, velvety red star-shaped flowers and thick succulent leaves. Known for both its ornamental charm and its relatively fast growth, it's a favourite among collectors seeking showy, fragrant blossoms.
Distinctive Features
- Flower Colour and Texture: Unique deep red corollas with a fuzzy, almost felted surface and a contrasting central corona.
- Leaf Structure: Thick, leathery leaves that are elliptical and glossy with prominent veining.
- Growth Habit: Strong vining form that benefits from trellising; suitable for hanging baskets or vertical supports.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch foliage.
- Water: Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering; reduce in cooler months.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity above 60%; consider misting or a pebble tray in drier environments.
- Media: Use a chunky, well-draining mix rich in bark and perlite or pumice.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–30°C; protect from temperatures below 12°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound; choose a slightly snug pot to encourage blooming.
Additional Notes
- Flowers are mildly fragrant, particularly at night, attracting nocturnal pollinators in the wild.
- Non-toxic to pets, making it a safe option for households with animals.
