Hoya elliptica
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Hoya elliptica is native to tropical Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Thailand, where it thrives in humid forest canopies as an epiphytic vine. It is admired for its broad, glossy leaves featuring prominent white venation, and its dense, fragrant blooms arranged in spherical umbels.
Distinctive Features
- Leaf Texture and Patterning: Broad, elliptical leaves with striking white veins give this plant its unique identity.
- Floral Display: Produces sweetly scented, cream to pale yellow flowers arranged in semi-globular clusters.
- Growth Form: A twining or trailing epiphyte, often cascading elegantly when grown in hanging pots or allowed to climb.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some morning sun; avoid harsh midday rays which may scorch the foliage.
- Water: Water when the top few centimetres of substrate are dry; reduce frequency during cooler months.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity; ideal for terrariums or bathrooms with bright light.
- Media: Use a chunky, free-draining mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat.
- Temperature: Thrives between 18–28°C; sensitive to temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound, ideally in early spring.
Additional Notes
- Flowering is often triggered by stable conditions and bright light; patience is key as mature plants bloom more reliably.
- Sticky nectar may drip from blooms – place away from delicate surfaces during flowering season.
