Prepare to be amazed by Hoya gigas, a truly remarkable Hoya species that stands out for its giant leaves and captivating, velvety flowers. This extraordinary Hoya is native to the Philippines and is a prized addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Enormous, ovate leaves that can reach up to 25cm (9.8 inches) in length and 15cm (5.9 inches) in width. The leaves have a deep green colour, a slightly fuzzy texture, and prominent veins, adding to their dramatic appearance.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of large, velvety, deep red flowers with a lighter corona. The flowers have a unique, slightly spicy fragrance and are truly a sight to behold.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a vigorous vining growth habit with thick, sturdy vines that can reach several metres in length. It thrives when provided with a support to climb or can be grown in a hanging basket.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some direct morning or evening sun can promote flowering.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix.
